Positive/negative balance

What people say to you has an impact. It influences every aspect of your life. Though some people are harmed by patterns established early on in life and gravitate towards bad messages about themselves, healthy humans tend to hang out with those who make them feel good. That feel good needs to be authentic, not an artificial flattery.

While we need to stop and evaluate, at least once in our life, whether we’re spending time with people who affirm what’s good in us, we also need to stop and evaluate at least once a month whether we are the people we’d want to be with.

How many positive things do you say to those you love? How many negative things? It’s remarkably easy to fall into the trap of placing more emphasis on someone else’s faults than on their successes. I’m not talking big stuff, I’m talking dishes, a kind word to the kids, helping with homework, staying calm in a frustrating situation.

Have a good long think: what’s your positive to negative comment ratio? I challenge you to make it three to one. I’d love to hear what results you get.
